August Van Hier, Winter Landscape With Sunset & Figures

August Van Hier, Winter Landscape With Sunset & Figures

This absorbing oil painting by artist August Van Hier captures a wintery landscape immersed in the omnipresent drama of a setting sun. Light seems to flicker like fire as it shimmers from the ground. While a broken horizontal of burnt sienna slices between clouds. Sparse trees and a distant spire gently interrupt the bleak scenery.

Van Hier’s inclusion of the figures creates a sense of poignancy - a reflective mood perhaps. The notion of these wandering nomads heading towards the final embers of the day conjures up unusual associations. There’s an apocalyptic air - a quiet resignation.

Signed in the lower left and held within a later swept frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
