This exquisite light-filled landscape by Anthony Vandyke Copley Fielding (1787-1855) captures the eminent beauty of our beloved isle in a manner only he could. The harbour is radiant, illuminated by a divine hand, as the sun sets amid a crescendo of graduated tints.
It’s classically inspired but rather than ruins, Copley Fielding gives us fishermen dragging their nets through the undulant mud. A rusted anchor, some wrecked driftwood, a chalky coastline - this is the England he loved and admired.
Copley Fielding was ours, a special talent that enriched the rugged British countryside with a sense of permanent tranquillity. While the industrial revolution was brimming with steam, he sought the calm mists of ancient valleys and headlands.
