Antal Berkes, Impressionistic Street Scene With Figures

Antal Berkes, Impressionistic Street Scene With Figures

A fine early 20th-century impressionistic street scene by Hungarian painter, Antal Berkes (1874-1938). Dozens of men and women, dressed in their fineries, are scuttling along the street - perhaps shopping or on their way home. While several horse-drawn carriages are rattling their way through the centre of the composition. It’s a painting that evokes the sights and sounds of a bustling city.

Berkes was born in Budapest and later lived in Paris, where he enjoyed capturing views of bustling streets. It’s possible that the street here is located somewhere in the French capital but it could also be in his hometown or Vienna. Berkes studied at The Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest and his paintings were exhibited at the Ottó Herman Museum.

The painting is housed within a handsome gilded frame with foliate and decorative borders. Signed in the lower left.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
