Impressionistic Pastoral Landscape With Sheep

This charming early 20th-century oil painting by Danish artist Andreas Moe (1877-1952) depicts a pastoral landscape with grazing sheep.

Under the hazy tints of mid-Summer, several sheep graze on gentle pasture. The sweeping curves of verdant scenery punctuated by a wise old tree leaning. This vista, probably in Bornholm Denmark, was a peaceful retreat for the artist. Returning here, time and time again, to paint ‘en plein air’ - trying to capture not only what he saw but also how he felt. Note the two tiny impressions of sailboats on the lake and the distant building nestled in the hills.

Signed/dated lower right and held within its original gilt frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
