This early 20th-century oil painting by Scottish artist Allan Ramsay II (1852-1912) depicts a gentle river view near Glamis in Angus, Scotland. As the sun drifts beyond the horizon, passing clouds are illuminated by twists of tinted vermillion. Ramsay loved it here.

Inspired by the independent minds of French painters, Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot and Jules Dupré, Ramsay elevates his views with feathery brushwork and a key eye for composition. His pragmatic approach and adoration for nature’s various moods, earning him a prominent place in the hearts of local citizens.

With its varied topography, Angus is quite mesmerising. Lowlands, mountains, winding streams, idyllic woodlands - an artist’s paradise. This particular view is probably along the banks of the Dean Water close to Glamis Castle.

Exhibited 19 works at the Royal Scottish Academy and four at the Glasgow Institution. Also exhibited regularly in Dundee where he gained a solid reputation. The press remarked “the works of this talented artist are so well known that it would be superfluous to attempt a description of any, suffice to say that many flattering testimonies have been paid to the artistic qualifications of this artist, for the superior and highly-finished manner in which he transfers nature to his canvas.”
