Alfred H Vickers, River Landscape With Coastal Buildings

Alfred H Vickers, River Landscape With Coastal Buildings

A charming 19th-century river landscape by British artist, Alfred H Vickers (fl.1853-1907). The eye is immediately drawn to the tall building situated to our right, which is painted with a deft touch and plenty of detail. It evokes the sights and sounds of local workers hoisting goods from the river and perhaps there’s a winch on the other side.

Alfred H Vickers was probably related to Alfred Gomersal Vickers (1810-1837) and Alfred Vickers Senior (1786-1868). He’s known to have exhibited at the Royal Academy and generally painted in England.

The painting is signed in the lower right and housed within an ornate later frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
