Coastal Landscape With Rain

Alfred Broge

Coastal Landscape With Rain

This early 20th-century oil painting by Danish artist Alfred Broge (1870-1955) depicts a rural coastal landscape with hayfield, crops, and distant hills. It’s a masterful work, with the light carefully observed as it breaks through a gap in the rain clouds.

Alfred Broge was an accomplished Danish painter of landscapes and interior scenes. He trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts under prominent landscape artist Rudolph Bissen and exhibited regularly at Charlottenborg Palace.

In 1909, when he produced this piece, he completed a similar landscape depicting Arrenakke Bakke in North Zealand and this is likely another view from the same area.

Rain is challenging to paint but he’s handled it superbly.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
