This late 19th-century oil painting by British artist Alfred Augustus Glendening (1840-1921) depicts a picturesque view in the Norfolk Broads, England.
Nestled under a leafy canopy, rendered with a soft brush, a rowing boat stands idle. The surrounding foliage reflected in shimmering silvery waters. This day, perhaps in August, the light fell through clouds - uplifting the riverbank in verdant tints and tones.
Glendening’s England was a humble affair avoiding contrivance in favour of truth. His heartfelt depictions are quiet and modest. Skilfully handled and lacking embellishment. For those that look carefully, nature provides ample inspiration, with its ever-changing light and various moods.
Glendening’s observation was second to none, a master of naturalism within a landscape he adored. Perhaps, like George Vicat Cole RA (1833-1893), he sketched from the river before rowing downstream in search of a view.
