Adolf Reich, The Antique Collector

Adolf Reich, The Antique Collector

A fine early 20th-century genre scene by Austrian artist, Adolf Reich (1887-1963).

Here we see two older gentlemen sat within a plush interior, which is adorned with antique books, art and ceramics. The gentleman on the right is examining a small artefact, which is held by the second gentleman - perhaps an antique dealer.

Reich possessed an extraordinary ability to capture the smallest of details with the utmost care and his style was entirely traditional. He trained at the Academy of Arts in Vienna and elected to paint in a classical style despite many of his contemporaries opting for the avant-garde.

The painting is signed/dated in the lower right and housed within a later frame with coved sides.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
