Portrait Of A Woman

This mid-20th-century portrait depicts a young woman with an orange top. She sits, partially turned, her image captured with strong lines and confidence marks.

The work is signed, maybe V Berg, in the lower right but we’ve been unable to track down the artist. It’s clearly by a good hand given its rapid nature and level of expression. It’s a little reminiscent of portraits by Isaac Grünewald (1889-1946) and it’s likely that the artist trained under him.

Grünewald taught at the Academy in Stockholm and later opened his own school. Underpinning his approach was his own studies with Henri Matisse in Paris.

Framed and glazed.

Medium: Pastel on paper
Overall size: 24” x 29½” / 61cm x 75cm
Year of creation: 1956
Condition: Artwork presents well.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
