Snow Landscape With Track

This impressionistic early 20th-century Danish oil painting depicts a snow-covered landscape with track.

The dazzling effects of light hitting snow rendered by an experienced hand. When boots sink through into muddy earth and punctuate a blanket of white. It’s the kind of day that induces a squint as you leave the home, the brightness somehow intensified. It’s hard to capture but handled superbly. Note the subtle variations on the track with its pockets of icy blue. And the distant trees, little more than a few deft marks.

The work is signed in the lower right but we’ve been unable to identify the artist. It’s likely they initially trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and later perhaps at the Kunstnernes Frie Studieskoler, which was inspired by emerging techniques in Paris. It’s a little reminiscent of works by Alfred Sisley such as ‘Effet de neige à Louveciennes’.

Signed lower right and held within a gilt frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
