A charming mid-19th-century wood engraving depicting a picture sale at Christie and Manson (now Christie’s). The engraving was published in The Illustrated London News on the 24th of March 1856 along with the following description:

“The scene engraved upon the next page is one the great attractions of every London season; for to the man of art, letters, and leisure, Christie’s is as much a national establishment and favourite lounge as the Royal Academy or the Opera.“

“We shall add, at present, that the accompanying illustration has been recently sketched and contains portraits of well-known habituals of the rooms.”

The engraving is held within a fine contemporary frame.
