19th-Century Portrait Of A Lady With A Leda & The Swan Cameo Brooch

19th-Century Portrait Of A Lady With A Leda & The Swan Cameo Brooch

A charming mid-19th-century portrait of a lady wearing a black dress with lace collar and cuffs. She’s also wearing a beautiful cameo brooch depicting Leda and the Swan along with a long gold chain.

An inscription on the reverse refers to Mary Hothersall (1834-1905) who was born at ‘around 6 o’clock on the 20th of October 1834’ but we’ve been unable to track down any information about her from the census.

The portrait is housed within a later frame.

Medium: Oil on canvas
Overall size: 32½” x 40” / 82cm x 101cm
Year of creation: c. 1860
Provenance: England
Condition: Some minor paint loss and scratching but overall very presentable.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
