19th-Century Portrait Of A 17th-Century Gentleman In A Hat

19th-Century Portrait Of A 17th-Century Gentleman In A Hat

A worn 19th-century oil on canvas depicting an older 17th-century bearded gentleman wearing a hat. It’s almost certainly after a painting by one of the old masters and it feels a little Dutch. If you discover who he is, do let us know.

The painting is signed illegibly in the lower left.

Medium: Oil on board
Overall size: 17½” x 22½” / 45cm x 57cm
Year of creation: c. 1900
Provenance: Germany
Condition: Paint losses and various marks although the paint is not flaking. The board has a curve. Frame with age-related wear.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
