    This 19th-century German oil painting depicts a gentleman wearing a black suit. He’s sporting a rather fine moustache and beard combination - a goatee.

    During the 1870s, gents were expected to dress soberly with little in the way of ostentatious elaboration. Shirts were generally plain and hair was worn shorter than in previous decades. To convey a sense of authority, some opted for beards or prominent ‘mutton chops’.

    Here, the sitter appears to be wearing a cloak atop his suit and has opted to shave his sideburns. His beard is reminiscent of that worn by Prince Leopold in 1876.

    Condition: Canvas relined. Old restorations. Fine craquelure but the paint is stable. Discoloured varnish.
