Portrait Of A Gentleman

This characterful 19th-century portrait depicts a dapper young gentleman with his arms folded. Attired in a smart black coat with a high collar, he’s remarkably contemporary for a gentleman portrayed over 180 years ago. During the 1840s, male fashion became less conspicuous and a little sombre. The frock coat was a popular addition for day wear with the emphasis on creating a narrow line.

Signed/dated in the lower right and framed.

Medium: Oil on canvas
Overall size: 15” x 17½” / 39cm x 45cm
Year of creation: 1840
Condition: Craquelure but the paint is stable. Minor losses. Frame with some light wear.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
