19th-Century German School, Portrait Of A Gentleman

19th-Century German School, Portrait Of A Gentleman

This characterful 19th-century portrait depicts a dapper young gentleman with his arms folded. Attired in a smart black coat with a high collar, he’s remarkably contemporary for a gentleman portrayed over 180 years ago. During the 1840s, male fashion became less conspicuous and a little sombre. The frock coat was a popular addition for day wear with the emphasis on creating a narrow line.
