Kitchen Interior With Cat

This charming mid-19th-century German oil painting depicts a kitchen with chair, cat and various cookware.

A creeping tabby moves surreptitiously towards a tempting bowl of milk. A basket of vegetables is tipped over, perhaps by its curiosity. On the wall behind, various coppers hang on nails along with a worn ladle. An old blue shawl is draped over a proud studded chair.

This intriguing rustic interior is probably the artist’s own kitchen. Note the attention to detail - the cracked floor tiles, balanced knife, and missing plasterwork. They probably knew that mischievous cat all too well.

Signed/dated illegibly in the lower right and held within a gilt frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
