19th-Century French School Barbizon School Landscape With Fisherman

19th-Century French School Barbizon School Landscape With Fisherman

A wonderfully atmospheric French school landscape depicting a tree-lined pond and a seated fisherman. It has a ‘lost in time’ quality and appears to be a barn find.

It’s signed ‘L Devedeux’, which refers to the great French landscape painter Louis Devedeux (1820-1874). It’s unlikely that he painted this so perhaps the artist was a follower. It’s certainly from the same period.

The painting is housed within a chippy gilded frame with swept foliate decoration.

A rare and unusual piece.

Medium
Oil on canvas
Overall size
25” x 29½” / 64cm x 75cm
Year of creation
c. 1850
Provenance
France
Condition
Time has taken its toll. The canvas has a layer of accumulated dirt which has caused the darkening. It could be cleaned to revive its true colour if you wish. There are also a few paint losses and areas of craquelure. The frame is holding together but has several areas whereby the composite and gilding is missing. This painting will suit someone that enjoys the timeworn appeal of barn finds.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
