Reserved - 19th-Century English School, Rural Landscape With Track

A beautiful 19th-century landscape painting depicting a peaceful rural view with a well-worn track and figure.

The artist has been influenced by the style of the French impressionists - as so many British painters were towards the end of the century. Often, they would merge their classical education with their own experiences of Paris - the result being a traditional landscape view created with looser brushwork and an emphasis on light.

The painting is signed David Bates in the lower left.

Medium: Oil on canvas
Overall size: 24” x 16” / 61cm x 41cm
Year of creation: c. 1900
Provenance: Sweden
Condition: Good. Craquelure in areas but the paint is stable.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
