19th-Century English School, Portrait Of A Young Lady With A Pink Sash

This charming 19th-century English school portrait depicts a lady wearing a white dress with a pink sash and bow. Her left arm rests upon a giltwood chair.

Given her outfit, the portrait probably dates to around 1880 when styles had become noticeably more refined and lacked the weight of the previous decades. Large voluminous dresses had been replaced by simpler designs yet still retained trims and frills. Here, the lady is probably wearing a bustle, which emphasises the back while keeping the front fairly flat.

She holds a small posy and stands before upland scenery.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
