Portrait Of A Scholar

This charming mid-19th-century English oil painting depicts a young man wearing a dark frock coat with a white shirt and stock.

A young scholar, astute and ebullient, rather proudly carries a cap. It’s a portrait almost certainly intended for display in the family home. The artist, although unknown, has rendered the details precisely and with sensitivity. Note the pushed-over fringe, deliberately windswept to emphasise outdoor pursuits.

Held in a gilt frame with foliate, which is probably original.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
