Portrait Of A Distinguished Gentleman

A charming mid-19th-century country house portrait of a distinguished gentleman. He’s sitting beside a table with a book, quill and inkwell.

Intriguingly, under the table, there’s a small opened letter with a wax seal. Is this a clue regarding the gentleman’s identity or activities?

The portrait was previously hanging in a New Forest country house and it’s held within a fine maple frame.

Medium: Oil on canvas
Overall size: 27” x 31” / 69cm x 79cm
Year of creation: c. 1840
Provenance: England
Condition: Craquelure. Overall very presentable. Frame with some light age-related wear.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
