19th-Century Dutch School River Landscape With House & Mill

19th-Century Dutch School River Landscape With House & Mill

An attractive 19th-century oil on panel depicting a picturesque river landscape. Our eyes are guided initially by the tall tree on the left-hand side and then down along the riverbank - out towards the distant mill. The painting is unsigned but it’s clearly by a competent hand - perhaps Academy-trained.

Note how the gap in the clouds on the right seems to give the composition balance and offset the dense trees on the left.

The painting is housed in a good later frame.

Medium: Oil on panel
Overall size: 27” x 22” / 69cm x 56cm
Year of creation: c. 1860
Provenance: Holland
Condition: Very presentable overall. A line towards the left hand side caused by varnish but barely visible.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
