Seascape With Fishing Boats & Town Beyond

This late 19th-century Danish School seascape depicts several boats sailing in turbulent waters under a majestic evening sky. Sails are billowing as the various vessels grapple with the conditions.

The work is unsigned but it’s by an accomplished hand. Note the details of the near-silhouetted town with its factory, windmill and steeple beyond. It’s plausible that it’s a Dutch view.

Stylistically, the work feels akin to those by Danish artist Vilhelm Bille (1864-1908) who was the son of Carl Ludwig Bille (1815-1898) - a master of the art.

Housed in a gilt frame.

Medium: Oil on canvas
Overall size: 18” x 14½” / 46cm x 37cm
Year of creation: c. 1870
Condition: Artwork presents well. Light craquelure but the paint is stable. Canvas relined. Frame with some light wear.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
