19th-Century Danish School, Forest Landscape With Stream

This exquisite 19th-century Danish landscape painting depicts a forest view with towering birch trees. It’s majestically rendered and captures nature at its finest.

In the foreground, the stones seem to flicker, touched by the light - as reflections in umber emerge from the stream. The eye wanders upwards, drawn by the mist, the early morning haze hovering above foliage. The birch trees creak, contorting across the void. Twisted by time in a little-known forest.

The rising scenery has such depth and interest that it seems to pull you towards it. Each layer more intriguing than the last. Note the bright area behind the trees with its floral accents and the distant climb with its gentle tints.

The painting is unsigned but evidently by an academy-trained artist. The reverse bears an exhibition label.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
