19th-Century British School, Stable Scene With Animals

19th-Century British School, Stable Scene With Animals

This charming late 19th-century oil on canvas depicts a quiet stable scene with restful animals. A white horse stands, somewhat elegantly, over a cockerel. Two faithful dogs look on.

The artist is unknown but it’s plausible that it’s by someone painting their own stable. It’s a little folky, which adds to its country house charm.

Housed in a fine period giltwood frame.

Medium: Oil on canvas
Overall size: 18½” x 17” / 47cm x 43cm
Year of creation: c. 1880
Condition: Craquelure but the paint is stable. Frame with some wear.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
