19th-Century British School River Landscape With Fishing Boats

19th-Century British School River Landscape With Fishing Boats

A fine mid-19th-century river landscape depicting several fishing boats gently lit by the final rays of the evening’s sun. We love the atmosphere which has been created in part by a muted, almost monochromatic, palette.

The painting is housed within a beautiful foliate frame with pierced centres and corners.

Medium: Oil on canvas
Overall size: 12½” x 10” / 32cm x 26cm
Year of creation: c. 1860
Provenance: England
Condition: Craquelure throughout but the paint layer is stable. Canvas relined. Frame with cracks and a missing piece at the bottom.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
