19th-Century British Folk Art, Portrait Of John & Fanny Sharman

19th-Century British Folk Art, Portrait Of John & Fanny Sharman

This charming mid-19th-century portrait depicts John Wright Sharman (1839-1885) and Fanny Shadlow Sharman (1843-1911) with the family dog. John and Fanny hailed from Billingford in Norfolk and were born into a family with a rich farming heritage.

Both had fascinating lives and we’ve created a blog article with further information

The portrait was once owned by John Wright’s son John Spurrell Sharman (1871-1959) and his signature is included with the portrait on an old piece of original canvas.

If you would prefer the portrait framed, just let us know and we’ll source something appropriate. Alternatively, it would hang nicely as it is.

Medium: Oil on canvas
Overall size: 25” x 30½” / 63cm x 77cm
Year of creation: c. 1855
Condition: Artwork presents well following its restoration. Canvas relined. Some craquelure but the paint is stable.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
