Reserved - 19th-Century Barbizon School Landscape With Fisherman

An atmospheric oil painting depicting a fisherman on a beautiful lake in a rural area of France.

The artist has used an earthy natural palette of browns and blues to great effect. The reflections on the lake are particularly splendid and evoke memories of peaceful days in the countryside.

Stylistically, the painting fits with the approach taken by the Barbizon group of artists who were active between 1830-1870. These were some of the first to truly embrace painting outdoors and they’re seen as a precursor to the French impressionists.

The painting is housed within an appropriate later frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
