Madonna & Child With Saint Augustine

An exquisite 18th-century drawing depicting the Madonna and Child with Saint Augustine and Saint Barbara.

It’s possibly a study of an Italian altarpiece by Pietro da Cortona (1596-1669), which once adorned a church in Rome.

The artist has worked in pencil with black chalk and washes.

Medium: Pencil and black chalk on paper
Overall size: 12½” x 20” / 31cm x 51cm
Year of creation: c. 1760
Provenance: England
Condition: Areas where the paper is a little lighter but nothing that overly distracts. Frame with some light age-related wear.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
