Landscape With Figures

This beautiful 18th-century landscape painting depicts a glorious view across a mountainous region of Italy.

The light is exquisite and typically Mediterranean - it’s the environment sought out by travelling artists. A sunlit haven on a gentleman’s grand tour.

In the foreground, two figures are resting by a large leaning tree. While ahead of them, several buildings are positioned atop a rocky peak. Imagine standing nearby, surveying the undulant scenery, while bathed in warm air.

The artist has captured this view with an abundance of charm and a love for rural Italy.

The painting is housed within an attractive later frame.

Medium: Oil on canvas
Overall size: 19” x 15” / 47cm x 39cm
Year of creation: c. 1780
Condition: Craquelure but the paint layer is stable. A few minor losses. Frame with some age-related wear.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
