18th-Century German School, Portrait Of A Gentleman

18th-Century German School, Portrait Of A Gentleman

A characterful mid-18th-century portrait of a stout old fellow with ruddy cheeks and a satisfied expression. Perhaps it’s a portrait to hang in the dining room.

The gentleman is wearing a green jacket over a dark waistcoat along with a white neckerchief.

It’s presented in a feigned oval and held within a good later frame.

Medium: Oil on canvas
Overall size: 25” x 30” / 63cm x 76cm
Year of creation: c. 1750

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
