Sigurd Wandel, Interior Scene With Young Siblings

Sigurd Wandel, Interior Scene With Young Siblings

A sublime early 20th-century interior scene depicting a boy reading while his younger sibling plays in a cradle. The artist, Sigurd Wandel (1875-1947) has painted this with a great deal of expression and we particularly love the way the baby’s arms and legs are full of movement.

Wandel studied under Kristian Zahrtmann and also at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts where he later became a director. He was particularly skilled at interior scenes with figures and often painted families.

He was awarded the Eckersberg Medal in 1910 - one year before this was painted.

The painting is monogrammed/dated in the lower right and housed within a period frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
