    This fine set of 18th-century etchings by Jean Marie Delattre (1746-1840) depict four dining tables, each with a set of items relating to a theme - Penury (poverty), Choice, Frugality and Necessity. They’re cleverly done and abundant with symbolism.

    In ‘Choice’, we’re confronted with a pleasant dilemma - add lemon or sugar? While in ‘Penury’, the scene is bleak with scraps of food and broken pots. ‘Necessity’ depicts a table crammed with medicine (and an ominous pocket watch). And ‘Frugality’ focuses on the simple meal of a worker.

    Delattre produced the etchings after works by Peter Pasquin and they were published in 1796 by James Birchall.

    All four are framed and ready to hang.
