Herje Gustav Rydberg, View Of Klara, Stockholm

Herje Gustav Rydberg, View Of Klara, Stockholm

A light-filled view across rooftops in Klara, Stockholm, by Swedish painter, Herje (Härje) Gustav Rydberg (1927-2003). We love the almost illustrative nature of this architectural landscape painting.

It’s interesting that Rydberg chose to paint Klara at this point in time - just a few years prior to a period of urban renewal which saw the demolition of many small shops and workshops. Perhaps he was trying to capture its old charm before the wrecking ball arrived. His father worked in manufacturing and it’s tempting to think that his Dad’s old workshop was affected by the area’s transformation.

Rydberg studied at Otte Sköld's painting school in Stockholm and later at the Academy of Fine Arts.

The painting is signed in the bottom right and housed within a frame that’s probably the original.

Medium: Oil on canvas
Overall size: 33” x 28” / 84cm x 71cm
Year of creation: 1948
Provenance: Sweden

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
