Henri Heyligers, Landscape Study

Henri Heyligers, Landscape Study

An expressive, easy-going landscape study by accomplished Dutch artist, Henri Heyligers (1877-1967). This splendid piece was almost certainly painted outside while he admired the relaxing view.

Heyligers is generally considered to be a painter of genre scenes depicting women with children but he also painted still lifes and landscapes. His style tended to be fairly formal so this piece is unusual for its expressive nature. It’s interesting how decorative a quick study can be - particularly when paired with a modern interior.

Heyligers studied at the Academy of Fine Art in The Hague, at L’ Académie des Beaux-Arts de l’instiute in France and at l’ Académie Comon in Paris.

His works were exhibited at various museums including the Veluws and Stedelijk in Amsterdam.

The painting is signed in the lower right.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
