Hans Christian Jensen, Portrait Of Niels Viborg Johannes Petersen

Hans Christian Jensen, Portrait Of Niels Viborg Johannes Petersen

A fine late 19th-century bust-length portrait of Niels Viborg Johannes Petersen (1841-1900) by Danish painter, Hans Christian Jensen (1836-1903). It’s a portrait that's imbued with an abundance of charm and character.

Jensen was a precocious talent that began as a landscape painter and received various accolades for his work. However, in 1864 he volunteered to join the Danish army and tragically lost his leg during the Battle of Als. This injury ultimately led to him switching his focus to portraiture.

From that point on, he was commissioned to paint a host of Danish dignitaries including King Christian IX and Queen Caroline Amalie of Augustenborg.

The painting is signed/dated and housed in a good later frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
