Early 20th Century Dutch School, Peeling Vegetables At The Table

An early 20th-century Dutch school oil on canvas depicting a young lady peeling vegetables at a table. She’s dressed in traditional Dutch clothing including a pair of yellow clogs.

This quiet interior scene evokes the stillness and intrigue of a work by Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675). It captures the beauty within an everyday domestic moment - one that would otherwise pass us by. We love the colours in her dress and the way she rests her feet on the table. And her arms are quite muscular - probably because she’s always busy.

The painting is signed illegibly in the lower left, perhaps ‘Pluis’.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
