Carsten Henrichsen, Coastal Landscape With Mother & Child

Carsten Henrichsen, Coastal Landscape With Mother & Child

A fine 19th-century landscape painting depicting a woman and child walking along a coastal track under a vast sky.

The artist, Carsten Henrichsen (1824-1897) has captured the wind-swept scenery perfectly and the whole composition seems to be leaning left. The bush on the right of the couple appears to have grown diagonally with the wind whipping across the open landscape.

Henrichsen trained at the Royal Academy in Copenhagen and often painted views along the Danish coastline. Part of Copenhagen is situated on an island known as Zealand, which was another popular spot for artists to draw and study.

Henrichsen received the Neuhausen Award in 1855 and his works are held in private collections worldwide.

The painting is monogrammed in the lower right and housed within a 19th-century gilded frame that’s probably the original.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
