Carl Vilhelm Meyer, Interior Scene With Older Lady

Carl Vilhelm Meyer, Interior Scene With Older Lady

This gentle early 20th-century interior scene by Danish artist Carl Vilhelm Meyer (1870-1938) depicts an older lady looking through a window into the garden. She’s sitting at a well-worn table and there’s an open book in front of her.

Meyer often painted scenes involving family and there’s a strong possibility that this is his mother, Jacobine Helene Catharine Meyer (b. 1842). Perhaps she enjoyed this spot and often admired the garden while reading by daylight.

The painting is signed/dated on the table and housed within a period frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
