Carl Gustav Ludwig Jacobsen, Village Landscape In Autumn

Carl Gustav Ludwig Jacobsen, Village Landscape In Autumn

A beautiful oil on board depicting a mother and daughter walking along a village street by Danish painter, Carl Ludwig Jacobsen (1890-1957).

Jacobsen was a prolific artist and produced a diverse portfolio of work. Prior to becoming a painter, he worked as an illustrator and cartoonist at Danish newspaper ‘Dags Pressen’. His skill for drawing enabled him to turn his hand to various disciplines.

He was inspired by the old masters, such as Delacroix, Rubens and Corot. However, as you can see here, he also gained inspiration from the French post-impressionists.

He travelled extensively to further his art education and exhibited all over Europe. But perhaps his greatest achievement was a commission to provide decorative works for the Royal Danish Theatre.

The painting is signed in the lower right and housed within a fine decorative frame that’s probably the original.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
