A fine early 20th-century portrait of Titus van Rijn by Axel Johansen (1872-1938) after the original by Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669).

Titus was Rembrandt’s fourth son and he was often a figure or model in his father’s paintings. Here we see him depicted face on with strong use of chiaroscuro (bold contrast of light and shade).

Axel Johansen was considered to be one of the foremost Danish painters of his generation and exhibited regularly at the Danish equivalent of the Royal Academy. Several of his works are held in museum collections.

The painting is signed and housed within a period frame.
