Alfred Wahlberg, Coastal View With Sailboats

Alfred Wahlberg, Coastal View With Sailboats

A beautiful late 19th-century oil painting depicting a coastal view with sailboats by Swedish artist, Alfred Wahlberg (1834-1906). It was probably painted outside with the sea view stretching out in front of him.

Wahlberg was a fascinating artist who is considered to be one of the first to bring the French impressionistic style of painting to Sweden. He initially painted in a traditional manner with careful attention to every branch, stone and figure. But after moving to Paris in 1866, he became influenced by the looser approach to landscape painting and adjusted his brushwork accordingly. His interesting blend of old and new ultimately led to medals at the Paris Salon in 1870 and 1872.

Wahlberg is represented in several public collections including the National Museum of Arts in Stockholm.

The painting is ascribed on the reverse and held within an ornate foliate frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
