Alfred Märtens, Coastal Landscape With Estuary

Alfred Märtens, Coastal Landscape With Estuary

This vibrant coastal view by Danish artist Alfred Märtens (1888-1936) depicts an estuary winding its way towards the sea. The shimmering blue tones of the waterway cut between the ragged banks of sand and grass. There’s almost a snakeskin effect to the water with its abundant ripples and undulations. And with this central focal point, Märtens brings emphasis and guides our eye through the the composition.

In the distance, under a tranquil Summertime sky, a strip of dark blue is interspersed with the white flashes of breaking waves. While the beach in-between is sparsely populated and near silent.

Signed and held within its original frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
