19th-Century Idealised Landscape With Lake

19th-Century Idealised Landscape With Lake

A fine 19th-century landscape painting depicting an idealised rural view with figures. It’s inspired somewhat by classical Italianate landscapes rather than the British romantics. For example, note how the composition guides our eye via the use of a leaning copse to our left. While the light feels hazy and seems to blur the distant trees in the background.

This combination of a rural English view with a classically inspired style reminds us of the great English landscape painter, Richard Wilson (1713/1714–1782). He’s considered by many to be the father of British landscape painting as he enlivened the popular views of the day with a new sense of beauty and idealised wonder.

The painting is housed within an ornate gilt frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
