19th-Century Danish School Portrait Of An Older Lady With Knitting

19th-Century Danish School Portrait Of An Older Lady With Knitting

A characterful mid-19th-century oil on canvas depicting a seated older lady with knitting needles and wool. She’s wearing a black dress with a lace collar along with a beautiful white bonnet.

We love the movement in this piece, she’s leaning forward as if she’s about to recall an interesting story.

The portrait is unsigned but it's clearly by a well-trained hand. It's housed with a period giltwood frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
