18th-Century French School, Portrait Of A Lady In Blue

18th-Century French School, Portrait Of A Lady In Blue

A fine 18th-century portrait of a young lady in a blue dress with a white shawl. Her outfit aligns with the fashion of the 1770s, which was understated when compared to the extravagance of the Marie Antoinette era.

Her refined style is enhanced with a large diamond earring and a rose suggestively placed in the bosom. A rose is sometimes placed here to attract a potential suitor and suggest availability.

We particularly love her friendly, almost cheeky, expression.

The portrait is housed within a gilded frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
