The Beach At Hastings

This early 20th-century watercolour by English artist Henry Robertson (1848-1930) depicts the beach at Hastings.

Nets sprawl from a dormant fishing boat before dapples of beachfront buildings. The misty tints of cliffs punctuated by masts. Robertson loved it here and lived just a few minutes up the road. He often pitched up on the sand to capture the view at different times of the day. Here, we see him working quickly with an impressionistic spirit before the light changes.

Held within a later frame and glazed.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
