The composition is carefully orchestrated to draw the eye inward, from the shadowed foreground to the silvery cascade at its centre, then beyond to receding layers of mountain silhouettes. Giffinger has employed a deep 'repoussoir' of foliage and rock on either side to create a theatrical framing that heightens the sense of depth. Within this darkened stage, the water becomes the true protagonist - forceful, yet rendered with remarkable subtlety.
It is here that the artist’s skill is most evident - building the torrent through nuanced tonal shifts. Soft veils of grey and green, broken by touches of pale luminosity to suggest a scattering of moonlight across churning surfaces.
