Take a quiet moment to step into the world of this painting.

This calm late 19th-century oil painting by Robert T Stuart (XIX) depicts a picturesque river landscape with a washerwoman and distant cottages.

Under the gentle glow of a partially cloud-covered sky, a woman works at the river's edge. She's set within a gently receding composition that leads the eye from the foreground, across the still water, and into a softened distance where smoke rises faintly.

To the left, a dense grouping of trees anchors the scene in shadow, while the right opens into light and reflection. The figure is modest in scale, almost absorbed into the setting, yet essential - she provides both narrative and rhythm.

This is a painting that settles you. The river is calm. The labour is quiet and untroubled. The landscape is in harmony.

Stuart’s works are reminiscent of those by the Barbizon School of painters, who were the first to truly embrace painting ‘en plein air’. While this piece is a little later, there's a distinct echo of those past masters.

Held in a late 19th-century carved gilt frame with scrolling foliate ornament and pronounced corner flourishes.
